Help and Support Center not connecting to the internet
Posted by clippert@adelphia.net on October 17th, 2005

When I access the Help and Support Center through the Start menu in
Windows XP, the bottom right hand portion of the window where it says
"Did you know?" I get a message that says:

"When you are connected to the Internet, this area will display links
to timely help and support information. If you want to connect to the
Internet now, start the New Connection Wizard and see how to establish
a Web connection through an Internet service provider."

even though I'm connected through a broadband connection.

I found the following "work-around" but the link to the example is dead
and I don't consider myself proficient enough to trust my merged file.
Here's the work-around:

Download newsblock1.xml and newsblock2.xml using a download manager.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/s...ewsblock01.xml
http://support.microsoft.com/support...ewsblock02.xml

Open newsblock1.xml with Notepad
Open newsblock2.xml with Notepad

Merge both the files (leaving out the redundant NEWSHEADLINES tags) and
save as the following:

"NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml"

Format of the NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml file:
Example: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/temp/mergedxml.txt

Place this file in this location:
C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Config\News

Does anybody know what the merged file should look like and if it works
to solve my problem?

Charles

Charles,

The manual procedure should work, but I don't think it's really worth that
effort. BTW, here is the attached XML file, posted by Wesley Vogel.

news:OOMIT4p0FHA.560@TK2MSFTNGP12.phx.gbl
The merged file will look like that.

The hyperlink won't work for some reason. Is there a title you can
provide so I can look up the message? Thanks.

You need to use a newsreader to download the attachment.

I'm sorry to some across as such a neophyte, but I set up the
newsreader and I still don't know how to access the original message
that references the merged file. Any more specific instructions?

Type in Start, Run:

news://msnews.microsoft.com/OOMIT4p0...TNGP12.phx.gbl

Your default News reader will open that message (which contains the
attachment)

I get an error message stating "The parameter is incorrect"
I pasted and didn't type in the text so it shouldn't be a typo. Any
more hints?
