Hibernate resume problem. Advice please

Sometimes, but not always, when I try to resume from hibernation, I get a
screen advising me that Windows cannot resume, and giving me the following
two options:

(a) Continue with system restart
or
(b) Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu

If I select (a) the same screen returns. If I select (b) then the machine
starts normally.

I have been using this machine since WindowsXP was first launched (2002?)
but this problem only started a few months ago. In the last few days I
decided to update the machine with a new much larger HDD, performed a
complete new insallation of WindowsXP and updated it to the latest standard.
I hoped this would eliminate the hibernation problem. Imagine my surprise
and disappointment when the same hibernation behaviour persisted!!

Searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base turned up the following item:

The error message, 'Cause' and 'Resolution' seem to be exactly what I am
experiencing, and the 'Status' states:

"Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products
that are listed at the beginning of this article", namely Windows XP.

Unfortunately this article is dated October 2003!! and the problem still
appears to be unresolved.

Please has anybody got any ideas??

Pentium 4 1.6GHz
Memory 1Gb
ASUS P4B-MX motherboard
Primary HDD WD 320Gb
NVidia FX5200 graphics

1) Download the latest, WHQL certified drivers from nVidia (WHQL drivers
have been certified by Microsoft to work with Windows). Corrupt video
drivers are, by far, the most common cause of problems with hibernation.
2) Disable hibernation
3) Reboot into Safe Mode(F8 as Windows starts to load)
3) Delete C:\hiberfil.sys
4) Run chkdsk, defrag, and scandisk on your hard drives to ensure that
there isn't a problem with your hard drive that's corrupting your
hiberfil.sys file.
5) Uninstall your video drivers from Device Manager (you may have to reboot
into Safe Mode for this to take effect)
6) Install the new, WHQL certified nVidia drivers
7) Reboot into normal XP
8) Re-enable hibernation.

Thank you for your prompt response John.

1) I searched my C: drive, including hidden files, and there is no file
named hiberfil.sys
2) The nVidia driver I had installed was the latest WHQL certified.

Any other ideas?

Once you disable HIBERNATION, hiberfil.sys is deleted automatically.
I'd suggest you proceed with the CHKDSK, etc.
