- Hide inactive icons problem in notification area - volume control

Ok I've read past messages and many variations of this problem. But I
didn't see mine:
Every time I open the volume control (speaker icon), the hide/show icons
arrow button in the notification area first gets corrupted (blank box) then
disappears. It seems to return some time later. I have the Hide Inactive
Icons option checked. Ideas? TY
