- High CPU and Memory Usage
- Posted by D. Brissenden on October 31st, 2005
Hi,
When I start my XP PRO laptop, it is really slow. Looking at Task Manager I
see that SVCHOST and EXPLORER and between them eating into memory quite
quickly and are using all the CPU.
I have tried using anti-spyware and anti-virus and this doesn't appear to
indicate a problem.
If anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated

How much RAM memory? Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task Manager and
select the
Performance Tab. What is the Commit Charge? What was the Peak? What is
the processor speed?
Try and identify what applications are using the CPU. Task Manager is
useful but you could look at another freeware utility
Process Explorer, which provides similar information but adds that
little bit extra towards seeing what the running processes represent.
For further information about Process Explorer see here:

Look at what start on booting the computer:

What anti-spyware programmes have you run?

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry,
Thanks for your reply. With reference to what you asked....
There is 256MB RAM
Commit charge:
Total: 457408
Limit: 631984
Peak: 459272
The processor is 1.6GHZ PIV mobile
Even using a clean boot the problem persists.....

If possible add 256 mb RAM. You are using the pagefile too much , which
is much slower than RAM memory. Check Motherboard Manual for information
about capacity to add memory. If you do not have Motherboard Manual
download Everest.
http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/U..._Download.html
This will give information about your motherboard and enable a search to
be made for a copy of the Manual. on the internet.
How large is your hard drive and how much free space does it have? If
your hard drive is partitioned then details for each partition would be
helpful.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry,
Unfortunately at this point in time I cannot add more RAM
I don't know
whether this is of any help but it has only just started this today after I
installed Autocad - until then it has been fine???
It is a 20GB hard disk with approx 13GB free space. It is not partitioned.
Kind regards

Further thought. If you have just installed a programme you need to do
some housekeeping.
Run Disk CleanUp to remove Temporary Internet Files in all User Profiles
and also
selecting More Options, System Restore and remove all restore points
except the most recent one.
Run Disk Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry,
It was Autocad R14. I have pretty much convinced myself that was the
problem because I removed it this morning and there has been no problems
since.
I did try disk cleanup with no luck. I will reinstall and try deleting the
restore points and the defrag and see how I get along.
Are there any known issues with this version of Autocad? If the problems
persist, then I suspect that I will have to try and source some extra memory
and reduce the pagefile limit??
Thanks very much for your help.

When did you buy Autocad R14?
The link below gives the System Requirements for the current version:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet...112&id=5127273
If this applies to your version then you need more memory. However,
System Requirements are usually quoted as a minimum when more is
required for a smooth journey.

Hope this helps.

Yep this applies!!.....although it quoted 512MB minimum, we have a number of
users quite successfully usin 256MB which is quite surprising that it works
as well as it does. Having said that I do have a lot more thirsty programs
on mine so this is likely to be why.
Thanks very much for your help Gerry, it is much appreciated.
Kind regards
