How to activate Virtual Desktop Manager?
Posted by Ronald Fischer on October 17th, 2005

I have downloaded and installed Virtual Desktop Manger from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx

How do I actually activate it? I had expected to find some entry in the Programs menu, but there is none...

Ronald,

Right-click the Taskbar, and choose Toolbars
Enable "Desktop Manager"

Thank you, how easy! This works.

Only drawback now is that this resized my taskbar. It is now about 2-3
times
as wide as before. I tried to make it smaller again, but although I can
move
the taskbar around at will, it doesn't respond to any request for
resizing.

The big size is obviously a consequence of Virtual Desktop Manager. I
have
placed my task bar onto the right side of the screen, and VDM insists
in placing
5 tiny icons lined up *horizontally*, (4 representing the desktops,
and 1 for the "Preview" function), although for a taskbar on the right,
a vertical alignment would make more sense.

I can live with this, but in case you have a solution for it, please
let me know...

Ronald

Right click on an empty spot on the taskbar and make sure "Lock the Taskbar"
doesn't have a check next to it.
Left click on an empty spot on the Virtual Desktop Manager's taskbar and
drag it to another edge of the desktop.

This helps only partially: It works, but I have to do it again and
again after each restart of the computer. :-(

Then you should start a new thread about your system not saving your
settings

Thank you. Good site, but didn't help either.

How about http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm
under "Why doesn't Windows keep my folder settings?"

or
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
#30 left-hand column "Windows XP Doesn't Save User Settings"

or
http://www.theeldergeek.com/disable_...onfigurati.htm
(i know, it says "disable", but it also explains how to undo that fix)

or
http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com...ndows-XP-FAQ-S
Scroll down to "Save Settings on Exit"
and read the second half that referes to Xp Pro (if you're using Xp Pro)
