How to direct local SharedFolder to network shared folder ?
Posted by John7 on October 15th, 2005

Hi,

Std SharedFolder is local to a machine ( ...\Documents and
Settings\Allusers\My Documents ).
I want to point all "local SharedFolders" on several machines to 1 global
Shared Folder.

How can I change the local SharedFolder path to a network path ? ? ? ? ?
(like changing 'My Documents' path) or can I log in as Allusers ? ? ? ?
?

TIA,
John7

Might open Explorer and right click the folder you want to share (
....\Documents and Settings\Allusers\My Documents ).and choose 'Sharing and
Security...' from the context menu.

Thanks for responding.
Your suggestion means sharing on the local PC.
Destination side is not the problem here, the source side is.
I want the some PC's local SharedFolders point
to a global Shared Folder on a machine that is always up.
Call it a Shared 'SharedFolder'.

Are you using Active Directory? This can be done with group policies. If you
are not using AD it can still be done but it is much harder to administer.
You would have manually set up each pc.

Hi Kerry,

Not using AD, just Win2K pro. & WinXP pro.
I'll check out your links.

Thx,
John

If you have more than a few pc's networked you really need to look at Active
Directory or some other method of managing network services. Once setup and
running it makes tasks like you are trying to do very easy.

Thx, Kerry,

I checked out your links.
They all require a server 2k or 2k3 which I do not have.
My "server" runs Win2k pro, 1 workstation runs Win2k pro & 2 run XP pro.

How to find the currently active GPO in XP pro ?
Need to dig deeper in this GPO thingy.

Could replacing Allusers folder 'My Documents' by a link work as well ?
In a resource kit (or something) there was a link tool (can't find it
anymore).

Thx again.

I googled for SharedFolder instead of SharedDocs, argh !

I checked out TweakUI and X-setup but no such option.
Your first 2 links sound great, the latter was already known.
It would have been easy if one could log on as 'Allusers'
and redirect 'My Documents'.
