How do I delete registry entries using a .reg file?
Posted by Barry P on September 27th, 2005

I have used .reg files to set up registry entries many times. I have never
tried to remove entries in this way - how can I do this?
This needs to be run on a large number of PCs so editing their registries
individually is not really an option.

Barry

Create or edit the .reg file with Notepad. Put a "-" (minus character)
after the leading "[" (bracket) of any key you want to delete.

Example: (This removes the entire Key)
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Unwanted]

If you want to delete a value in the right pane use this syntax:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D27CDB6 or whatever]
"valuename"=-
--
