I recently formatted a hard drive re-installing Windows XP Home SP2
with all the updates and other software and set it up for the updates
to download and install automatically. Everything appeared to be
working fine. Two weeks later I went manually to the update site and
found there was 1 critical, 3 non-critical and 4 hardware updates. I
tried first to get the critical update. It downloaded alright but came
up with an Installation Failure Error Code: 0x80240017. I then tried
getting the non-critical updates - same thing. I was able to get and
install 2 of the hardware updates, but the other two failed with the
Installation Failure and same error code!
This is a legal copy of Windows XP Home which was bought with the
computer 2 years ago.
Does anyone have an idea of how to fix this problem - preferably
without another format? Or would formatting again be quicker in the
long run?
