Can someone tell me what I need to do to get XP on a laptop that does not
have an operating system presently? Do I need to buy the full XP or an
upgrade? Thanks.

Full if you do not have a qualifying OS such as Windows 95,98 ME etc.
Upgrade if you have an unused CD of a qualifying OS.

Also verify with the laptop manufacturer the laptop is compatible with
Windows XP.
