- Lost my taskbar and all desktop items

they seem to be on the hard drive, but lost start menu, task bar and
functionality of flying windows button can someone please tell me the file I
need to run to get the task bar back up, or how I can get to the control
panel from the command prompt.

Try pressing ctrl+alt+del to open the task manager
Click File | New Task (Run) and type in explorer.exe and hit the enter key
and check out http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
