Main development Windows XP machine no longer boots

My system suddenly developed the problem with the agp440.sys driver described
here...

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;324764

I tried to follow the steps to repair the problem, but I get the following
error while trying to access the recovery console...

"An unexpected error (16384) occurred at line 5118 in
d:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\setup.c."
"Press any key to continue."

When I press a key to continue, the recovery console will start up, but it
doesn't work. The "listsvc" command does nothing, and the "disable agp440"
command returns this error...

"The system registry does not appear to have an active ControlSet key. The
system registry may be damaged."

This problem appeared in the course of a single reboot. The system worked
fine Friday, I rebooted Saturday morning and boom. Any help appreciated...
