my computer gets hung on start up
Posted by dani on February 10th, 2008

I have a compaq presario computer with windows xp sp2 recently when I try to
start it it will get caught right when it gives me the compaq logo and I cant
do anything, there is no cursor, it says at the bottom of the screen I can
press Esc to get a boot menu, but I press Esc and nothing happens, what I
have been doing is shuting it down or unpluging it if it doesn't shut down
from pushing the button. This happend after I downloaded and installed the
new office programs; (from microsoft)I am not blaming them, I just mentioning
it incase it might have something to do with my problem.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

It is very likely that the added stress of installing a gigantic program
like Office has brought out defects in you hard drive. All is not lost, if
you can find a way to run the "Recovery Console" prompt, from a boot to a
setup disk. You would run the command:
CHKDSK /R

Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console:
