New security fix prevents FTP
Posted by DrJoel on February 16th, 2006

I use FTP from my network places everyday to transfer doc files to
server. After installing security fixes yesterday I am not able to
connect to server. I have deleted server address and made new FTP
address still doesn't work. I am able to use Core FTP to upload and
download so it must be something that was changed in Windows XP. It just
isn't as easy as before. Does anyone know about this problem and how to
fix it?

P.S. The error says "connection timed out" "Do you have permission to
use this server"

I can't replicate this and I'm fully patched too. can you connect to the
site using CMDline FTP?

Play with the FTP settings in IE (Enable Folder View) and Use Passive FTP
since that's what MNP is using to provide this.

In IE:
Tools->Internet Options->Advanced tab->Use Passive FTP
(about halfway down list)

FWIW, Command Line FTP uses active FTP only (not Passive)

Found the problem! When the last security updates were done they changed
a setting in IE. A few mentioned that I turn on PASSIVE mode for ftp in
IE which when I looked it was already on. So I tried turning PASSIVE off
to use ACTIVE and it now works again.
Thank you all.
