I had the same problem, you need to re-install your codecs
Go to Control Panel
Select Add New Hardware - the system will search and then ...
Click - Yes, Already Installed
Scroll to the bottom of the list and select Add New Hardware Device
Select Manual Installation
Select Sound, Video and Games Controllers
Click 'Have Disk'
Enter C:\windows\system32
Click browse and find mmdriver.inf
Select each codec in turn
If you are prompted for missing files they should be in c:\windows\system32
Unfortunately you will have to do this for each codec, but you don't have to
reboot after wach one, wait until you have done them all.
About half way down the list, my computer started making sounds again! I
installed them all anyway.
