ntfs.sys missing
Posted by shell on December 12th, 2005

Hello
Have a problem with an XP Home box.
The person installed Norton and rebooted to a lovely black screen with
Windows whining about how "c:\windows\system32\drivers\NTFS.SYS is
missing or corrupt"
Here is what I have had them try so far:
1. Boot to recovery console
Rename c:\windows\system32\drivers\NTFS.SYS ntfs.old
copy from the cdrom i386\ntfs.sys to c:\windows\system32\drivers
No workee.
2. Boot to recovery console
run chkdsk /p /r
No workee
3. Boot to recovery console
run bootcfg /rebuild
chkdsk /p /r
No workee
4. Boot to recovery console
run fixmbr
No luck
5. Run Dell HD diags, no probs found.
If anyone has any ideas or can see something I have missed
pllllleeeease let me know. Thanks

Try copying ntfs.sys to the root drive.

mabye it's having trouble finding it? I've seen it lurking there
before but now that I check it isn't... Just a suggestion =)

I noticed you ran "fixmbr" did you also run "fixboot" ? That's bailed
me out a few times =)

No, and Im not really sure why I didnt except I forgot about it being
an option. I will it tonight.
Maybe the mbr is hosed. Drives me nuts when things dont work!
Thanks very much for your help
