- path command variable character limit

What is the path command's character limit in XP and Win2k?
If we are exceeding the character limit, can anything be done to extend the
character limit? Outside of deleting some, what are our options?

Locally? Maybe use SUBST.

This was for the user defined variable - path statement.
Actually in waiting for a response I found a hotfix for Win2k that ups the
limit from 1024 to 2048 characters. For XP it is fixed in SP2.

I am not the one who is working on the machine, the problem was dropped on my
plate to solve. I believe it has a huge amount of apps installed (some kind
of graphics workstation) and each is adding to the path.
