I've installed a Belkin usb/ethernet adapter (F5D5050) in order to use a
wireless router (Netgear DG834G). I downloaded the xp driver for the adapter
from the Belkin site due to the provided software not being recognised for
xp.

Now when I try to start up the system freezes on the screen which enables
different users to log in. It also freezes if I try to restart or shut down,
mouse and Ctrl - Alt - Delete unresponsive.

I am able to log off user accounts using task manager I can start using the
last configuration that works via f8 and the router works perfectly via the
adapter. Also if I disable the adapter via Device Manager the system starts
up and shuts down without any problems.

Any suggestions or solutions would be gratefully received.
