PC won't go into standby or hibernate by its own....
Posted by Lisa on March 27th, 2008

My PC won't go into standby or hibernate on its own after a preset time.
I still can manually bring the PC into standby/hibernate without any
problem.

Don't know where to start to fix this problem, hopefully someone can help me
out. I am running XP pro. Have all the latest drivers and MS updates
installed

Thanks

Lisa,

There is a known issue with screensavers, after installing Wireless devices in the system. Although you may be able to launch the screensaver manually, it may not start automatically after the timeout period.

Visit the Windows Update page and install the update that appears as Optional Hardware Update and has the following title:

Microsoft HID Non-User Input Data Filter

Thanks again, but I don't have any wireless devices installed and nothing to
update on the website...my system seems to be up to date.

Does this problem happen in a clean boot state?

Thanks again Ramesh, I got some time to go through the clean boot process
today and everything worked fine with clean boot. After going through all
the running services, it looks like the culprit is the "Avast" virus
scanner. I have the paid version and I emailed them today, hopefully,
they'll get back to me soon.
