Run a virus scan (your choice but preferably not Norton or McAfee) and a
malware scan(SpyBot Search & Destroy for example) with up to date programs.
Run msconfig.exe and look at what items are being started at boot. If you
don't recognize an item, Google it. Only start essential programs and those
you use every time you start the PC.
If you use programs that are real resource hogs, 512 mb might not be enough
ram (it is suitable for most users however).

There are many possible reasons, and they do include drive failure.
If you haven't backed up your data already, stop, and do so before you
proceed. You can easily back up by removing the drive from your system,
attaching it to another XP system that has enough drive space (use a USB2
drive case or adapter) and simply copy the data files, or use imaging
software to get it all.
If your system has no meaningful data, you can skip that step. If it does
have data you want, do not skip it.
You can also download and run Process Explorer (google that name and you'll
get a link right away) which will tell you what is using processor cycles.
But if the drive is failing, and if the failure involves an area that holds
system files, the system can slow right down with virtually nothing running.

I had the problems with email RA around 5 years ago and I do not recall
finding out what the problem was so I cannot answer your follow-up question.
I have used RA connecting via Messenger hundreds of times and only have had
a couple of times when I could not connect.
