- Problem with NTVDM when installing "The Sims" or running COMMAND.C
- Posted by CJayMead on November 6th, 2005
Hi, I am hoping somebody can help!!
When I try to install The SIMS, I get an error: "NTVDM.EXE has encountered a
problem and needs to close". I also get this message when I try to run
COMMAND.COM.
I have tried replacing AUTOEXEC.NT, CONFIG.NT and COMMAND.COM but to no avail.
Hope someone can help.

Some additional information that I hope will help:
I found a Microsoft Article, called "MS-DOS-based programs do not run as
expected on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Wndows XP, or
Windows 2000", from http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=890067, but there
isn't a link to the hotfix mentioned in this article.
Does anyone have the hotfix already downloaded???

replacing the first two is the normal cure for this
issue; copy them from \windows\repair to \windows\system32
the real problem here is how your original autoexec and config got deleted
in the first place - it usually indicates an attack or infection. scan you
system carefully and ensure it is not (still) compromised.

Hi
I don't think that the autoexec.nt and config.nt were actually deleted.
They had the same date and time as other files in c:\windows\system32.
I have tried re-expanding them from the XP CD, but I still get the same
problem.
I have also checked for viruses and spy ware, but nothing was found. I also
ran the system file checker (sfc /scannow) but it didn't find anything to
replace.
Hope this helps????
