- Program will neither uninstall nor allow a new install
- Posted by Pam on April 14th, 2006
Hi -
I hope I'm directing this request to the correct newsgroup, because I
couldn't find another one that seemed more appropriate. I've been having
lots of computer problems, and I've had to uninstall several CD/DVD-related
programs in an attempt to get my DVD drive and CD drive to recognize when a
disk is put in. That part seems to be fixed now, but with all the
troubleshooting, I had to use System Restore several times. Now that I've
returned to the original restore point, Windows Installer pops up every time
I restart the computer telling me that it is preparing to install Roxio Easy
CD Creator 7. That's one of the programs I had to uninstall during the
troubleshooting time. Then it immediately puts up a box that says that it's
unable to find the certificate file. I click ok, then another box pops up
with this message - "There was a problem authenticating your version.
Please make sure you system is set to the current date." When I try to
uninstall Roxio using the Add and Remove Programs feature, I get those same
two boxes. I, therefore, can neither install nor uninstall the program.
The Roxio program came bundled with my DVD drive, and I have the original
installation CD for it. When I put the CD in the drive, it starts to
install, and then those same two messages come up yet again, and it tells me
that the installation was interrupted before it could be completed. Can
someone tell me where to find this so-called authentication and certificate
file? I'd really just prefer to remove this program from my computer
completely and then do a new install with the CD. I'd certainly appreciate
any suggestions you might have. .....Pam
I'm running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2.

I'm having the same problem with the same program (Roxiop Easy CD Creator
&.) Also, system restore won't open. Wish somebody would tell us how to get
out of the Roxio box. (I'm also running xp with sp2.)

Since the problem is with Roxio Software, I'd suggest making your inquiry
about the problem with them... They should be able to tell you what to do
about your error boxes...

Roxio was no help. Formatting my hard drive and re-installing all my apps
and hardware seems extreme. There must be somebody out there who has solved
this problem before. Anyway, if all the brains at m.s. and roxio can't tell
me how to remove one pesky program, that's what I'm gonna do.

Well, here is what I have dug up... Below are some quotes from various
sites, which seems like it will solve both of your problems...

First--some background. I use Easy Media Creator 8.0 (the latest version).
However, I still have the earlier version (Version 7.0) installed, as well.
For some reason I was unable to uninstall 7.0 before/when I installed 8.0.
In fact, I still cannot uninstall the thing. The uninstall utility stalls,
and locks up the PC.
1. a Roxio error message appears (titled Roxio Easy Media Creater
7.0--Install Shield Wizard)
2. Nothing happens for maybe 5 seconds
3. Another Roxio 7.0 error message appears: "Unable to find a certificate
file"
4. When that is cancelled out, a final Roxio 7.0 error message appears:
"There is a problem authenticating your version. Please make sure your
system is set to the current date." (Note: It IS set to the current date.)
Any ideas how to deal with this strange issue? It began immediately after I
uninstalled Norton Systemworks 2006--a program I no longer want on my PC.

thought you and others might like to know. i solved my problem. i somehow
located the following:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;290301
from this page you can download: msicuu2.exe it's called microsoft
installer clean-up utility. after installing the utility, run it. it creates
a list of all the programs that used microsoft installer. in my case that
long list included Roxio 7.0 (as well as 8.0). I then simply selected Roxio
7.0 for removal, and hit "Enter." I believe the utility simply removes all
references to 7.0 from the installer section of the registry.

Windows installer pop up and tried to install EMC. Process is always same.
First Windows Installer icon appears thand
Roxio EMC 7: Installshield wizard
3. Unable to find a certificate file
4. There was a problem authenticating your version. Please make sure your
system is set to the current date.
When I tried to reinstalll EMC error message appear saying," Install.exe has
encountered a problem and need to close."

you will probably need the Microsoft Cleanup Utility. From what I saw in
your post, I would advise you to get someone to help you.
Try using the Microsoft Cleanup Utility to get rid of all Roxio and Sonic
files on your computer, reboot, then try to reinstall.

I did exactly what you said. I download the Microsoft Cleanup Utility, and
got rid off all Roxio and Sonic folders. I was able to reinstall EMC 7 and
my E: drive was able to recongize cd-rom, and every thing seems normal.
