Registering Windows XP
Posted by rfdjr1@optonline.net on October 3rd, 2005

Last week I had to do a repair/reinstall of Windows XP Pro. It asked me if I
wanted to register WIndows, but I couldn't get a connection at the time, so I
said no. How can I go back in and register it now? Is it even necessary? I used
the same disk as I used to install XP Pro last year when I built the system.
It's my copy, bought and paid for. I remember registering it when I first
installed it at that time. I don't want the operating system to stop working
because it wasn't registered.

Also, I just received a new laptop today, with Windows XP Home installed as the
O/S. During startup, I was asked to register it, but I didn' have the laptop
hooked to the internet at the time, so I said register later on that one too. So
I guess it's the same question, how do I register now after I declined the first
time? Thanks.

You don't have to register it. You have to activate within 30 days. There
should be icon of keys in the taskbar you can click on.

Thanks, but I'm not sure of the difference as it applies to the new laptop. If
it worked as soon as I logged onto the computer, does that means it's activated?
I don't wanto to get jammed up. So can you give me a brief difference between
activation and registration?

If it is an OEM installation of XP, it is most likely tied to the bios and
activation isn't needed. Registration just tells MS who owns the copy of xp
and gives them your email address. It's optional. Never is it required.

Try it this way, Start/run and type::

%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

First, checked that the command was entered properly including the space between .exe and /A

Second, check to see where Windows is installed on the system and use the direct path for the command.

ie: if Windows is installed at C:\Windows then make the command,

C:\windows\System32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

If this does not work, try the following command in Start/Run.

oobe/msoobe /a

If no joy, enter the following commands in Start/Run.

regsvr32.exe licdll.dll (Press ENTER)

regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll (Press ENTER)

Now try the C:\windows\System32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a command again.

If none of this works, call the Microsoft Activation Center for your location directly and they will be able to help.
