I "fixed" the problem by
disconnecting the hard drive
connecting another
installing windows
connecting the first drive as a slave/second drive
and then following the instructions in this MS article:
How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting
Article ID : 307545
And then
I changed the order of the drives on the cable: master / slave
booting to the original drive/windows
setting a restore point
updating windows,....
setting a restore point

Tuesday afternoon
I cannot get to a recovery console using the CD or a floppy.
I get this error: Registry_error Stop: 0x00000051
When attempting to repair the XP installation from the second screen I get the same error.
I think this started with some bad ram I just installed.
I have replaced it.
Any other way to get to a recovery console?
