- Repairing corrupt files
- Posted by txskyhawk on January 26th, 2008
Using XP with service pack2. Many of my saved files (JPEGs, Word, Excel) are
corrupt. In properties, they all show the same 6/8/05 modification date and
time. Is there any way to determine what I might have installed on that date
that could have caused the corruption? Files created after that date are
fine.

Use the Search option to look for files and folders that match that date.
Start/Search/All files and folders/When was it modified?/Specify
dates/Created Date option.
The search results might give you a clue as to what was installed on that
date.

The date specific search showed 1700 files, all in
C:\DocumentsandSettings\Owner\MyDocuments\. Most were Word, Excell, JPG,
BMP, or Microsoft Office Document Imaging files. There were a handful of
others including GIF, QuickTime, PDF, and some Firefox documents.
When I include hidden and system files in the search another 400 or so show
up. Most of these files are JPG or Microsoft Office Document Imaging files
with a few BMP and one QuickTime file. All of these additional files are
located in
C;\Documentsandsettings\Owner\LocalSettings\Applic ationData\HP\DigitalImaging\Vault.
They all have different files names with a combination of letters and
numbers (for example; fb2eca58_420814.tif).
All 2100 of these files were modified in a three minute time span on 6/8/05
between 3:26 and 3:28pm.

Since it appears that no folders were created on that date and most of the
files are common user created files.
It would appear (best guess) that a virus could have caused the corruption.
