Serious upgrade problem?
Posted by jay lunis on January 15th, 2008

Just bought a new Visa Home Premium PC and am moving all my apps over.
Went to move Office 2000 over and get a message I need the original CD
(2000 was an upgrade from a previous version). My problem is - I can't
find the original CD. I know, I know, I should have been much more
careful. Nonetheless, is there a way to get Office 2000 loaded on my
new PC or am I stuck?
Ummm, Office 2000 will work on Vista, right?

You are stuck.
Any Windows Application must be re-installed on a new computer to work. You cannot just copy it from
one pc to another as there are many system files required that are not located in the program
folder. Also critical lines in the registry are required that only get there during installation.
Office 2000 will work just fine in Vista, but you will have to find, or buy new copies, of the
original disks.

Just a quick heads up - Word and Excel 2000 are fine on Vista, but Outlook
requires a work around to function. Don't know about Power Point as I don't
use it. I have been using Word & Excel 2000 on Vista Home Premium for some
months now without issues, but ditched Outlook as it was too much trouble.
And yes, you will need the installation media I'm afraid. Hope this is
helpful - good luck.

Well, I'm not happy but that's life. Looks like I finally will have to
think about OpenOffice. Just out of curiousity, what is the work-around
for Outlook? I am currently using Outlook 2000.

Hi Jay. This blog details it very well.

I have worked through his process and found that it works OK, but I just
felt a bit nervous about Outlook after that. To be completely honest I quite
like Vista, but compatibility issues with some hardware and software mean
that I am currently preparing (blush) to go back to XP.

But if you decide to give the Outlook work around a go know that it has
worked for me. Good luck.

Open Office doesn't have an integrated Outlook replacement. It does
have a separate standalone app in BETA, but there is no counterpart yet.
OOo 2.3.1 is the latest stable version.
