Because that is the answer !
Shareaza is P2P software. You are allowing it to needlessly consume you Internet bandwidth
and computer clock cycles. Plus you are making your computer vulnerable to all sorts of
malware and hacker attacks becuase YOU are sharing YOUR computer.
People who use P2P software should NOT complain when their PC gets bogged down and then
eventually say "how did my computer get infected."
please educate yourself on both the resource utilization of P2P software and the
vulnerability such software introduces that leaves you "at risk" !

It slows your computer, and makes you a thief. It exists only to facilitate
the illegal transfer of material you did not purchase, not to mention the
tons of malware, viruses, trojans, keyloggers, worms and other garbage that
infect your computer when you open it to the P2P network.
Do yourself a favor...get all P2P apps off your computer. If you want
something on your computer, buy it or get it legally.
People like you, who take and share what is not rightfully yours, are part
of the reason why software costs so much.
Why don't you ask the other petty criminals on shareaza for help?

Why bother to respond when you are obviously incapable of seeing that the
answer was the correct one?
You are a petty thief, and you want someone else to help you to continue to
take that which does not belong to you?
You obviously have no morals, and you also seem to be without conscience.
Take Shareaza off your computer wan get what you want legally.
Loser.

Well, yes, that's a large part of its purpose. You're, in effect,
sharing your computer with anyone else who wants to connect. You've
given untold hundreds of other people permission to access your hard
drive and use your CPU cycles. What else but a slower computer could
possibly result?

Remove it.

Apparently you (Dave) along with alot of other reply posters have
failed to do your homework and jumped to hasty conclusions based on
your biased views of online file sharing. Shaeaza is a spyware and ad
free file sharing program provided freely as an open source project on
sourceforge. The source is open for free review, and the software has
had many positive reviews.
Now to answer Mr.Haarberg's question about his computer.
Unfortunelty there isn't much you will be able to do to make the
program run faster or use less resources. Some basic steps I could
recommend for anyone having slow computer issues would be stop other
programs running in the backround, make sure you're spyware and virus
free, tune up settings, ect. There are plenty of free guides for doing
this online.
Why you ask? Well, Shareaza connects to four MAJOR file sharing
networks. These networks are constantly barraging your computer with
file search requests of people searching for music and movies, ect.
This will generate a large amount of processor overhead due to the file
matching routines in the program checking to see if you have the files
being searched for. Also - The user interface for this program is
laiden with eye candy. Lots of graphics in a UI always means alot of
memory for storage and cpu time to update that UI when you do ANYTHING
with it. MY suggestion to improve your preformance is to only run the
program when you actually intend to use it, and just understand that
you're computer will run slow - just like when you burn a DVD or CD,
you wouldn't also watch a movie or check your mail... and when you're
not actually using the application, make sure it is completely shut
down.
Thats my two cents

I never said Shareaza was malware. I am saying that the use of P2P software lowers the
security level of the computer and is a vector of malware infection.
P2P software is a backdoor to ones computer and thus leaves the user open to all sorts of
malware and their computer and the data upon it is "at risk".
There are Internet worms specifically written for P2P software.
Example:
W32/Generic.worm!p2p -- http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100342.htm
"This is a generic detection of worms that can propagate through P2P file-sharing software
(Kazaa, Gnutella, eDonkey, Bearshare, Shareaza, Gnucleus, Limewire, Morpheus, Grokster,
etc.). "

| Sorry, the versions I've seen are malware included versions. While there
| may be a clean Open Source version, like LimeWire, there are many
| versions that include malware.
|
| With that in mind, there is no reason to have that crap installed on a
| computer.
|
That's a good point !
The software may not be malware but there are malicious web sites that have have repackaged
the P2P software to include malware.
This is not unlike going to a warez site and downloading a version of NAV which is often
accompanied by a Keylogging trojan.

The following is a McAfee log excerpt that was received via email from someone who used one

E:\NSW2005w_reg\NSW2005w_reg.part01.exe\KGNSW.EXE\ KGNSW.EXE ... Found the MultiDropper-BC
trojan !!!
The file or process has been deleted.
She admitted she obtained Norton System Works from a warez site :-)

Go them. They look like they are all the same EXE file.
Using; McAfee Enterprise VirusScan v7.1, DAT v4365, Engine v5000...

You could always use task manager to lower the priority so it would only use
otherwise unused cycles.

So the answer is to drop the resource hog.
Cheers,

It might start out as "spyware and adware free," but it's open-source
nature means that it is ultimately "unsecurable." Anyone with the will
and the knowledge can create and distribute a malware-laden version.
Thus, the product is ultimately untrust-worthy, particularly as it's
specifically designed to serve a niche market where complete disregard
of intellectual property rights and integrity are the watch-word.

Maybe the best advice is to say: do it, have fun and see you in a few
weeks time?
