Recently after wanting to restore my dekstop, (i had previously hidden
it using the option in the context menu, show/hide desktop icons.) i
have found i am unable to. I dont have the option to restore it. The
only thing i can think of that i have done is windows updates. Any
idears. I can still acces my desktop, i have a toolbar for it and i do
have items in the desktop folder.

Do you have TweakUI? If no, there is more.

If yes...
Open TweakUI | Click on Explorer in the left hand pane |
Check: Allow Web content to be added to the desktop |
Click Apply | Click OK

If you do not have TweakUI...

There is vbs tweak here...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Read the instructions at the top.
16. Active Desktop - Enable or Disable
Click on Enable to download activedesktop.vbs

This is the registry key...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Value Name: NoActiveDesktop
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Allow Web content to be added to the desktop
1 = Don't allow Web content to be added to the desktop

Among other things, this policy removes Show Desktop Icons from the right
click context menu for the Desktop.

I do not have tweakUI, plus that active desktop vbs script did not work.
alough serveing its purpos it seems that norton antivirus, (&/ or)
Utilities blocked it from change as it had been changed automaticlly
because of security, supposivley.

I managed to get my icons back by re-enabeling my active desktop in
norton utilities. Something that i was un aware of that i could do.

However as you can see my icons just dont seem all there.
http://www.jami3.co.uk/icons.jpg

What would cause this, drop shadow?
That is showing the colour that is behind my wallpaper.
(by the way im running windows xp media center edition if that makes
any changes to what could cause my problem.)

Thanks,
Jamie

The color where the text is on the icons is the Background Color.

To change the Background Color...
1. Right click an empty area of your desktop and then click Properties.
2. Click the Desktop tab, under Color on the lower right, pick one.

The color fills the space not used by a picture. I.e around the text.

Or it might be this...
Desktop icons and icon labels may not display background transparency or the
drop shadow effect in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP

its showing the background colour. But the fix they posted did not work,
Infact i had allready had evrything they specified allreay done.

I have tried disableing this and no luck.
I cant thing of anything else.

Any more idears; I apriciate all this help.

Hi Jamie,

Your Desktop icons are LOCKED.

Two ways to unlock the Desktop..

1. Right click Desktop | Arrange Icons By | Click: Lock Web Items on
Desktop to remove the checkmark

2. Right click Desktop | Properties | Desktop tab | Customize Desktop button
| Web tab | UNCHeck: Lock desktop items

Lock desktop items
[[Specifies whether Web content windows or items that you have placed on
your desktop are locked in place and can’t be moved. Select the check box to
lock Web content in place. Clear the check box if you want to be able to
move Web content.]]

That doesn't tell you that the icons' appearance changes when locked. The
icons look just like your icons.jpg. Sorry that I did not recognize that
right away in looking at http://www.jami3.co.uk/icons.jpg

My web items are locked, no matter what i have this selected as I get
the same problem. Its just my icons the colour where it is showing my
desktop colour rather than the wallpaper. The same problem as stated in
one of the Ms Fixes excpet that didnot work.

Change the color then.

Right click Desktop | Properties | Desktop tab |
Click the V under Color to see the choices

Color
[[Click to select a color to use on your desktop, or customize a new color.
If you did not select a background, the color will cover your entire
desktop. If you selected a background and chose Center in the Position list
box, the color fills the space around the background.]]
