Is there any way when I open a folder, to view the list of files in the
ACTUAL order tht they are stored in the folder?

For example, I have stored files (digital slides) named 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 into a
folder, (I put the files into the folder in this order: 5,1,3,2,4) and want
to see them listed in the order stored for a slideshow.

The slides must be displayed in the order I want not in a 'sorted' order. I
do not see ' unsorted' as a choice in the view menu.

Windows Slideshow shows the files using the sort order (sort by name).

Change the names of the files.

Example, original file names...
abc.jpg
def.jpg
ghi.jpg
jkl.jpg
mno.jpg

Rename to...
2abc.jpg
4def.jpg
3ghi.jpg
5jkl.jpg
1mno.jpg

Then the files will display 1,2,3,4,5.

Or use another program like IrfanView, that has more Slideshow options..

IrfanView - one of the most popular viewers worldwide
[[IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for
non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003.

It is trying to be simple for beginners and powerful for professionals.]]

That is what I was afraid of - I was hoping that there was some way to view
the existing files in the order *I* want them in not the way microsoft want
them!

Thanks for the reply.

Added comment:

Slideshow shows the slides in the order shown on the screen - I have
rearanged the slides (in the order I want to show them) in the folder on the
screen.

They will stay in that order until I click on view and reorder them in some
other order (size, type, etc.) then reorder them in name order. Until then
they stay in my 'unsorted' order.

Slideshow now displays them in THAT (my chosen) order, not in sorted order.

The reason for the question is that I burned a CD of the files in the
reordered order and want to show the slideshow CD on another computer
without having to rearange the slides in the screen on that computer.

BTW there are over 200 slides in the show.

It's free.

Did burn it and that was the problem - even irfanview shows the slides in
whatever order they are displayed in the folder.

My problem is that when the cd is opened, the default view is list in
alphabetical order.

Have used irfanview and it is great.

Well, shoot.

Not totally true, however...

[[Selected files may be sorted in a number of ways.
Click the Sort button; a dialog comes up, allowing
you to choose a sort order by name, date, size, or
extension. Files may be sorted in ascending or
descending order. To remove a sort, click the
No sort option button. When you have your sort
options set, click OK to close the dialog. To
exit without making changes, click the Cancel
button. Another way of exiting is to click the
X in the upper right corner of the box.]]
from...
IrfanView Slideshow

You may want to look at that whole deal.

This looks really helpful. Not that it's going to fix the sort deal. ;-(

When I click on the sort button, there is NO "No sort option button" (only
the 'yes' choices.)

When I reordered the slide icons, they stayed in the 'unsorted=my order'
when I closed that window and reopened it (both immediatly and after a
reboot). OK as long as I do not click on some 'sort' option.

My problem is that when I burn a CD, I have to start over with the CD window
and reorder the icons again. This is what I was trying ot avoid. (So anyone
could view the CD folder in MY 'sorted' order.)

Save yourself a lot of aggravation and use a slide show program. They cost
a little, but no problems. I use ProShowGold. It's free to try. I have no
connection with this company whatsoever. I just make good slide shows. :-)

Actually, the ms viewer that comes with windowsxp does an acceptable job.

I am using picassa2 (free from Google) - none of these slideshow viewers
have anything to do with the basic problem - not being able to keep the
slides in the order *I* want them in (I do not want them in any 'sorted'
order.)
