- Slipstreaming a disk
- Posted by Dawn_1117 on December 17th, 2005
I am running XP upgraded from ME. The ME disk is a repair disk (OEM). Is
there any way to slipstream a disk so that I don't have to put ME on when I
re-format? It does not recognize my NTFS paritions and my backup partition
got wiped out when I re-formatted. When I put the XP disk in and it asks for
the previous operating system disk the ME disk that I have does not work so
I end up having to install ME on and then install XP which is a pain. I
would like to create a all in one disk with the SP1 and SP2 on it as well.
Thanks

To slipstream XP SP2 you need his article:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm
You don't need to do anything with SP1a as SP2 is cumulative.
Also, there is no need to install ME but you must have a CD ready to
insert it in the drive when required to do so. This is just to check
the qualifying product.
It is a good idea o do a clean install of XP to clear all the clutter
from the HD.

Does anyone know where to get the free program call slipstream that
steps you through setting it up. I had it and lost it.

Dawn (& DrJoel):
You might want to consider a program called AutoStreamer. It's a freebie
(although the author accepts donations) and it's available from
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/S...streamer.shtml
It's a relatively simple program to use and it has become the program of
choice for many users for slipstreaming XP with SP2. Some good step-by-step
instructions for using AutoStreamer can be found at
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/slipstream.htm

Slipstreaming won't help you. It sounds like you have a Windows XP upgrade
CD which prompts for the ME media as proof of Windows ownership, and that
the ME CD is an OEM restore media and not a standard ME installation. There
isn't any way around that. You either need to get a full XP installation or
back up a cleanly installed system and use that image to reinstall. A
program like Acronis or Ghost would be best for this. BTW, why are you
repeatedly reformatting? That should almost never be necessary unless there
is a hard drive failure. It sounds like you need to look at your security
and maintenance practices.
