Slow Boot/Slow Defrag Tool Access
Posted by Papa on December 27th, 2005

When I reboot, it takes 15 minutes to finish coming up.
Most programs seem to run normally.
Disk Defragmenter is very slow to respond, but once the Defragmenter starts
working, it seems to work at the normal speed. The "Defrag" button does not
respond immediately and I have a lot of trouble getting it to start.
Occasionally I get 2 "Defrags" trying to run at the same time and of course
that does not work.

I have The following:
Windows XP Pro
2.4 GHZ Pentium 4
160 GB Hard Drive

Windows Updates are current

I have used current Updates when running the following
Zone Alarm
AVG Virus Protection
Spybot
Ad-Aware
Spywareblaster
Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool

I have ran Chkdsk from both inside Windows and from the DOS Prompt.
I have searched the Newsgroups and couldn't find anything that matched my
problem. If more information is needed, please let me know.

After I posted I ran MSCONFIG and selected diagnostic startup. The slow
boot was still there with a minimum of programs running.
