I had the axcact problem as Mitchc: hey, i just reinstalled my windows xp
due to some problems. and now i have no
sound... in windows media player it says "cannot play file" due to no sound
device instaleld on my computer.... how do i get one of these im havin tons
of trouble. helps appreciated, thx mitch
and the thing is, I dont know what kind of sound card I have, or even if I
have a sound card, but before I reinstalled xp I DID have sound, so I know
its possible to have it, I have tried everything and I dont know what to do,
if only I knew what sound card I have, if I have one even.

It would seem that whatever you have needs drivers beyond those on the CD
you installed with.
Only you know what hardware you have, so at this point, only you can
determine what drivers are needed.

Try going to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information.
Go to Components>Sound Device
In the right pane it should say what Sound Device you are using. Post back
here with info.

Try going to your computer manufacturer's website and downloading the sound
drivers for your pc. Uninstall any currently installed sound drivers,
reboot, then install those you downloaded. And, check for loose speaker
connections.
