have an XP folder deleting problem that is similar to things I have been able
to find described by others, but I have not really been able to find a fix.
I'm also wondering if it is related to the problem this same computer has
with not being able to "safely remove hardware" with a USB drive.
This computer is Windows XP, SP2, with all the updates auto-update sends out.
-----------------File Delete Problem------------------------
1) I create a folder ("FolderTemp"), create a text file in it with notepad
and close notepad.
2) I copy the file to another location from the new folder
3) I close the window for the folder
4) I try to delete the new folder ("FolderTemp").
When I do this, I get an error that the system is unable to delete the
folder since it is in use. Other computers do not have this behavior, so
this is not a normal Windows XP behavior.
I used ProcessExplorer, and detemined that explorer.exe owns the file handle
which is preventing me from deleting the folder.
This also occurs if I simply copy an existing text file into the folder
instead of creating it there.
If I reboot or log-off and log-on, I am able to delete things normally.
I also tried this in "safe mode", and have the same issue.
My virus checker and MS spyware come up negative for viruses and spyware.
I have also run chkdisk and sfc /scannow.
It occurs for all users of the computer.
I have disabled simple file sharing
---------------USB Drive Problem----------------------
When I put a USB drive in this computer, it will allow me to use "safely
remove hardware" to finish writes, etc. and let me pull the drive without
potentially corrupting it. If I copy a file from the drive to my desktop, I
cannot remove the USB drive without logging off (or rebooting). In this
case, ProcessExplorer does not show a file handle belonging to explorer.exe,
so I don't have convincing evidence of a connection.
--------------------------------------------------------
The reboot or log-off work-around works for now, but I worry that something
fundamental is messed-up. Any suggestions for a next step to get things back
to normal would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Erik
