User Profiles Gone - Can't Log in to Windows!
Posted by E. Toby Coe on January 25th, 2006

All User Profiles have somehow disappeared from the Windows log in start up
page. So I have no way of entering Windows or accessing my computer. Is this
a virus? A windows corruption? What do I do?
I tried doing a windows repair using the re-installation disk but after an
hour of re-installing and creating new user profiles, as soon as windows
booted there was no user profiles again! Please help!

What operating system are you running?

Are you getting a welcome screen with no names or icons?

If you are running xp, you might try hitting ctl-alt-del twice at the
welcome screen. This will give you a box asking for name and password. When
you installed, if you input an administrator's password use it here, with the
user name: administrator.

I am using Windows XP Home. I have no idea what administrator password may
have been used to set it up because it was over 2 years ago and it is a
shared computer.

Assuming the Administrator profile is still viable, with xp home you need to
go into safe mode. Hold the f8 key while booting. You will get a list of
options. Select safe mode. You may get a welcome screen with the term
"Administrator" on it. Click on it. If no password is required, you are in.
You can then go to Control Panel, User Accounts and create a user account
for regular signon.

What if I password is required? I think it is because I was prompted once
before while fooling around in safe mode after after three failed attempts it
shut down.
