What antivirus did you download? It sounds like you may have fallen
for one of the "rogue" programs such as WinFixer that really sabotage
your computer.

Can you boot the computer into Safe Mode? To do this turn it on and
start tapping the F8 key rapidly just as soon as the first information
of any kind (e.g. the HP opening logo) shows on the screen. Keep
tapping until the Windows XP Startup Menu shows and then choose "Safe
Mode" from the menu.

When it starts in Safe Mode choose the option to use System Restore
and select the most recent restore point that is *prior* to your
antivirus download.

When the System Restore is finished you should be able to use the
computer again. This time go to one of the following antivirus sites
and do a free online scan of your computer:
Bit Defender http://www.bitdefender.com
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com
Kaspersky Online Scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan http://windowssecurity.com/trojanscan
Webroot http://www.webroot.com/

You also need to ensure that you have a good antivirus program
installed on your computer and that it is being kept up to date. In
addition to the products offered by the sites listed above I can also
suggest AVG (free) from http://free.grisoft.com

Good luck
