Windows Error: "End Program: rundll32.exe. This program is not responding"

Occassionally, when I tried to open some applications, especially when
I open a file by double clicking it instead of opening it via an
appropriate application. For example, double click mydoc.doc will
launch MS word automatically. I will always got error dialog box saying
"End Program: rundll32.exe. This program is not responding." It turns
out the computer hangs, and I always need to kill the application.

What is this rundll32.exe? I didn't open this thing. I have no idea
what's going on. Any ideas??

please advise. thanks!!
