- Windows Help just stopped working...
- Posted by Stephan Golux on October 21st, 2005
Hello.
For about the past week, windows help just stopped working on my system.
Everything else seems to be fine.
If I select Start->Help-and-Support, nothing happens. I get an
hourglass for about three seconds, and nothing.
If I select (for example) Help->Contents from any application, I get a
dialog box that pops up that says "Could not start Windows Help".
How can I get this working again? Of course, the tech support people
for my computer have wonderful ideas like reinstalling the O/S. Right.
Thanks for any help on help....

Click Start then select Run and type in:
helpctr -regserver
regsvr32 itss
regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx
regsvr32 jscript
Press OK after each one
or
To reinstall Help and Support:
Locate the file called: pchealth.inf
This is located in C:\Windows\inf
Right click and choose install.
Make sure you have your WinXP CD ready.
Note: The folder is hidden by default.
Click Start, then select Run and type in: control folders.
Go to View: Show hidden files and folders and uncheck Hide extensions for known file
types.

I tried many things suggested in this thread. This is the one that
worked for me, it seemed. I can't claim to know what it did, but thanks.
