Windows XP gives black screen and blinking cursor at startup

Windows XP gives black screen and blinking cursor at startup: Posted by philipgph@gmail.com on December 13th, 2005; Today I switched on my PC and got the usual BIOS boot sequence,
followed by nothing else but a black screen with a blinking cursor.

I ran the recovery console and tried fixing the boot sector, nothing
changed. So I tried a repair install, it copied the necessary files,
then when it came to rebooting the PC, I got the blinking cursor again.
