XP fails to boot in normal, but will in safe mode

XP is failing to boot in normal mode, but will in safe mode.
i had just updated XP and the pc needed to restart, now it wont boot unless
booting to safe mode.
i get the windows loading screen and it just stays there, with the windows
logo and the blue dotted line moving across the screen.
i have deleted all the drivers i can find and i have run the repair console
and run fixmbr, chkdsk /p and it still wont boot.

help please

Craig, did you try a system restore from safe mode?
