I have a kind of wierd question that I hope won't seem too daft. First of
all let me say that I have been working with computers since the days of
the VIC20 and Atari 400 era. I have used Windows since 3.1 came out, and
I have been using the Internet since it first became available in my area
at $10.00 an hour dialup! (gasp!) So I know probably as much as any
unqualified tinkerer. (grin). I have a laptop with the following specs:

CPU = Pentium 4 1.8 Gig.
RAM = 512 Meg.
HDD = 40 Gig.

It’s a generic bog standard machine. It has run Windows 2000 and XP. But
here’s the rub. It should be totally capable of running XP, and indeed it
does install and work, but never just “feels” right. (Now there’s a
technically enlightening term). There’s tiny hesitations, things don’t
quite go as expected, and so on. The latest is that is often locks up
when shutting down and has to be stopped with the power button. Now, I
know all the things like Trojans, viruses, etc. that can do this sort of
thing, but I am reasonably well armoured with McAfee’s security suite.
The strange thing is that if I wipe the drive and clean install Windows
2000 it works smoothly day after day without a hitch, ever.

I am currently using 2000, but I have this copy of XP Pro sitting on my
shelf, and it annoys me to see it sitting there after I paid retail for
it to upgrade. I want to sell it, but before I do can I ask if anyone has
ever come across such a thing as a machine and a particular OS release
just not liking each other for no apparent reason? It’s sure got me beat.
I’ve swapped the two OS’s so many times that this phenomenon is quite
clearly consistent, and XP displays the issues even straight after a
completely clean install. I also install SP1 & SP2.

What it boils down to is this - I can continue to run 2000 and have a
trouble free machine day after day, or I can upgrade to XP with the
advantages that brings, and then put up with these little anomolies all
the time. I am grateful for anyone's thoughts on this, as I am at a
complete loss.

Clean installs of any OS is usually far better than the upgrade. The only
exception I can think of, for me at least, was going from 98 to ME. That
upgrade was better than the clean install of ME. If you can, clean install
XP.

Does it have the same problems in safe mode? Did you check for all the
latest XP device drivers for your computer? Any BIOS upgrade recommended
by manufacturer for use with XP?
Also, I wouldn't be so sure it's malware free solely using the McAfee suite.

Thank you for your replies everyone. I have yet again tried another clean
install of XP Pro, only this time I have held off installing SP2. So far
the machine seems perfectly happy. Wonder if there is something about SP2
it doesn't like? I like the added security it brings, but I can get on
fine without it if it solves the problem. Anyone else found similar
issues with SP2?

Some programs, especially older programs, have issues with SP2. That
conflict could be the reason you had those problems. My suggestion is to
load SP2 and then load your programs one at a time until you get that
"hiccup."

Thank you for an excellent suggestion. I had already started trying that
idea and I think I have found it! I make extensive use of an excellent
freeware Bible program which I have used for several years now. I think
it's the culprit. What a shame. As a minister I have got to know it so
well through using it on a weekly basis. Never mind, I'll check with the
software author, and maybe look around for another Bible package -
there's quite a few good ones out there that are either freeware or very
reasonably priced. Once again, I extend my grateful thanks to those who
have offered helpful ideas on this issue. And may your festive season be
a truly blessed and happy one for you all.

Hi Ricky, and thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately that is the one I
have been using. However, I have it all set up again, but without SP2 and
everything seems fine. Think I'll leave well alone and stay with it as it
is for now. Having upgraded from Win2K I am sure it is an improvement,
