I purchased a new Dell, Dimension 8300 computer, pre-
loaded with MS Office XP (Small Business). I immediately
experienced technical problems with both software and
hardware. Therefore, with Dell Corperation`s Technical
Support advice, I`ve reformated the Hard Drive 3 times;
with the resulting loss of all software, established on
the Hard Drive. Hence, I`ve been required to reload
Microsoft Office XP, at least 3 times.
I write letters and reports in other languages, besides
English, and I own language, letter font programs, which
are only compatable with MS Office 2000. I tried several
times to load MS Office 2000 on my C-Drive, while
concurrently keeping MS Office XP on the D-Drive (another
Hard Disk) installed on my computer. I could never get
Office 2K and XP to co-exist together, without
conflicts. As a result, due to work pressure, I
uninstalled Office XP several times and reloaded
(installed) it several times (I did not keep count).
To make a long story short; I can now no longer load
Office XP. The last time, I succesfully used your
product, I was directed to: First a Microsoft Website---
which was non-operational and then to a automated
telephone location. Whereupon, I was told by your
automaton to enter a long series of numbers; later the
robot gave me numbers to inter, to enable Office to
work. After yet another Dell Computer problem, I was
instructed, yet again to format my Hard Drive (the one I
now had Office XP installed on). I then learned that I
had exceeded my pre-ordained number of loads, now offered
in Office XP.
Now, when I tried to explain this all to your staff, I
was treated with suspicion. I was more or less told that
I was the "type of customer" Microsoft Corporation had to
protect against. Therefore, due to happenstances: 1) I
can no longer load or use MS Office XP and 2) Have been
defined as a thief by Microsoft Corporation`s Staff.
This has resulted in extreme frustration, disappointment
with Microsoft and displeasure with Microsoft on my part.

Dear David:
My point is: Microsoft Corporation has, in their
paranoia about protecting their software from piracy;
have set-up a complicated system, which limits honest
users from employing their software. If I pay for
software and abide by the copyright laws and agreement
contract, I (or you for that matter) should not be unduly
harassed, accused, labeled, libeled or denied the use of
a service of product. I am curious to know where
Microsoft is going. The progression of verification keys
and codes, designed to protect against software piracy is
now so complicated and arduous to perform that it will
soon erode customer satisification and brand name loyalty
for Microsoft products and hardware. One can always be
smug and insist that the user of Microsoft products must
be precise and well-read in procedure, to guard against
any mistakes during use. But, we live in a "real world,"
of non-guru users, who are just trying to get their work
done. And, these customer/software users should not be
encumbered by a "software police strategy" for making
innocent mistakes. The key is to allow for honest
misteps and the like, while going after (in the legal
sense) the real criminals, reproducing software
illegally. Finally, only a "real thief" obsesses about
other thieves; and Mr. Bill does not have a shining past
history, in the virtue of honesty, when using the
copyrighted material of others. Enough!
