An old computer, which has Office97 (Standard, Upgrade
version)is being replaced.

I tried to use the old installation CD to install Office97
on the new computer - which came with WindowsXP. That
includes Microsoft Works, which is one of the software
items qualifing for use of the Upgrade version.

The setup program gives a "no qualifying software"
message, and terminates the installation.

Is there a way to install that Office 97 Upgrade, or do I
have to buy a new edition of Office?

The version of Works (or Works Suite) was produced this year. How on earth
would the programmers of Office 97 have known of the existence of Works 7 or
Works Suite 2003 all those years ago? You cannot use a NEWER version of
Works as a qualifying product for an OLDER version of Office. Office
versions are NOT forward compatible. If you do not have the version of
Office (4.3 or 95) or Works (I've never used it so I'm not too familiar with
the version numbers but the Suite would have been the 94 or 95), then you
have no choice but to purchase a new copy of Office.
