Outlook icon on desktop

Question - is this a shortcut I can freely delete? (It doesn't have the
usual shortcut arrow on it.)
I have recently installed my Office 2000 Professional on a new laptop using
Windows Vista. I do not want to use Outlook, nor have it available to any
other users; thus, I'd just like to remove any shortcuts to Outlook. I did
the normal full installation, not the custom, which is why it got installed.

Its not a shortcut, in the usuall definition of such.
Modify your installation, to remove outlook, otherwise users will be still
able to acess it, if they know where to look.

Back to the original question, can I just delete that icon, even though it
isn't a "normal" shortcut? Somehow I got rid of it on an older PC using
Windows XP, but I don't have a clue now as to how I did it. Also, I don't
know how to remove just Outlook; using the Windows Vista uninstall screen,
it just shows Disk 1 for Office 2000, but not the individual office
applications. I don't care if Outlook still is on the PC, I would just be
happier if the desktop icon were hidden or removed. Thanks helping an old
dog trying to learn a new trick.

You insert your Office CD and modify the installation to remove OL
On the next screen expand the folders, select OL set not to run from PC
OL2k has compatibility problems with Vista, so even if you are not using it
you may have other issues

I believe the OL2k icon can simply be deleted, you may get a msg to confirm
the delete

The presence of the special Outlook icon on the Desktop is governed by
two registry keys; from

To show the icon, create this registry key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
and have DWORD
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
not as 0.

Alternatively, use Powertoys/TweakUI.

To hide the icon for a user, have the latter DWORD as 0. I guess it
would be hidden system-wide if you delete the first key.

Yes you can delete the icon from the Desktop if you do not plan on using Outlook.
