I bought a new computer and no longer have the original
software that qualified me for the upgrade version of
Office XP Professional. How can I install the software?

Without a qualifying product, which I might add is part of the licence, you
cannot.
You will need to buy? a qualifying product - and keep it!!

If you had a qualifying product for Office XP Pro you can try here

I had a qualifiying product and it was installed on my
computer. The the whole system crashed. I had to reformat
the hard drive(s), at the same time I upgraded from 98 to
XP. I am having major regrets.
I wonder if it's reasonable to expect people to keep
outdated software after we buy an upgrade?
Isn't there some record when I registered the product? If
not, why did I go through that process?

Without a qualifying project you will have to buy the full version to
reinstall. It is a condition of your upgrade license that you have the
original software in your possession or installed prior to initiating an
upgrade. There are no exceptions.
