- Removal/Install Office 2000
- Posted by Ryan on August 9th, 2005
Hello I am currently running windows 2000 service pack 4. I recently
uninstalled office 2000 and am now trying to reinstall but everytime I get to
the point it ask for the cd key it says that its invalid. I know it is valid
because I tried it on another pc and it works perfectly fine. Is there
something in the registry that I may have to delete because of the previous
installiation? HELP ME PLEASE, this computer the office is installed on is
vital to our day to day operations. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in
advance

Why did you uninstall Office 2000? Uninstalling and reinstalling seldom
fixes anything.
See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=842566 "'This is an invalid CD Key
value' error message when you try to install Microsoft Office".
If you still can't get the CD key to work, then uninstall Office 2000 again,
download and run one or both of the removal utilities at:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=239938
Utility to completely remove remaining Office CD1 files and registry
entries
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=247674
OFF2000: Utility to Completely Remove Remaining Office CD2 Files
.... and then try to reinstall Office 2000.

As far as I can tell, the log says the command worked as it
should have. The log doesn't say why setup stops. The only
other idea I have is to turn off your antivirus and firewall
programs before you install Office.

Hi,
I don't see anything in the log about an invalid key? Looks like setup
is OK, but MSI is not happy. Are you running this from a CD, and if so,
where did you get the CD?

CAUSE
This problem may occur if the registry contains Microsoft Windows Installer
information from an earlier Office installation.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove
the Windows Installer registry settings, and then reinstall Office. To do
this, follow these steps: 1. Download, install, and then run the Windows
Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Windows Installer registry settings
that are associated with your Office installation. The following file is
available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:
msicuu2.exe
(http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...bd/msicuu2.exe)

sure that you install Office in the same folder where it was originally
installed to prevent duplication of files on your hard disk.

Thanks everyone, but none of these methods are working, ive tried everything
and the furthest I got is being able to install office but when I actuall run
word, excel, access or any other office application, I cant use it because on
the splash screen its says unknown user, unknown register or something like
that and im looked out of the program, so I dont know where to go with this
now.

Sorry about that. Its a cd that I purchased and I also put it on a network
share. I tried both methods and to no avail. Hope that provided you with
better insight.

Hi Ryan,
Can you clarify the exact wording on the CD? It's just the log file you
posted does not look like it was run from a CD.
If you did run it from a CD, it's my fault for not understanding log
files very well.

well when that log file was created i did it from the share, sorry for the
confusion

Hi Ryan,
OK, first we need to know exactly what this CD says on it, so we know
the exact edition of Office we're dealing with. Then we need to know
whether the key you are using is also printed on the same CD box?
Then, you need to make sure all previous bits of Office have been
uninstalled, then run the SETUP program from the CD, passing the command
line parameters (just as you did before).
Then post the verbose log file back here. I'll compare it with my own
log files.
We're you saying this CD works on other PCs, but not this one, or did I
misunderstand that?

This cd and the cd key work on every other computer except for the one im
having the problem with. If I had to guess there is probably something in
the registry from the previous install confusing it

Hi Ryan,
As you have not answered regarding the details of the writing on the CD,
I'm starting to get the feeling this is not an original CD, so we don't
have a baseline to test from?
If you want to test this further, please review my post (one above this)
and answer the questions and follow the procedure.
