I expect shift + click to select multiple items, have the same problem with
ctrl + click

Ctrl+Click is supposed to take you to the link. For example you might
have a hypertext link in a document then you can ctrl+click it to go to
that page.
To select multiple items, fter making your first selection, hold down
CTRL, and then select any other items you want.
