Blu-Ray playing on Vista Media Centre Software question
Posted by Dave on November 24th, 2007

Can anyone please tell me what software is required to play Blu-Ray discs
through Vista Media Player. I have just fitted a Pioneer DBC 202 and using
the CyberLink BD software that came with it.

The newer graphics cards have excellent firmware decoding support for BR/HD
DVDs.
Also it is probably hard to see a significant quality difference on a small
screen between 1080i HD programming converted to 1080p and 1080p
programming.

This is not helpful and does not answer the question. I am not trying to be
nasty, but the question was related to Media Center not being able to do
Blu-ray. Microsoft backed a dead horse in HDDVD, but if they want to serve
their users they had better come up with an add on or a fix for Media Center.
As it is Media Center is BROKEN, if it can't play Blu-ray, the winner in the
high definition format war that pitted HDDVD and Blu-ray. Microsoft, Toshiba,
and the HDDVD crowd lost and Toshiba has announced that they will now stop
making HDDVD. HDDVD is dead. My understaning is that the XBox has HDDVD in
it. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I installed a Pioneer BDC-2002 in my
Vista Ultimate box and I have to use the Intervideo software that came with
it. My computer blue screened twice while attempting to watch a Blu-ray
movie, Bladerunner. An update for my video adapter may have fixed that, but I
have not started the movie again for the 3rd time. Microsoft, fix Media
Center, please.

Drivers for hardware add ons to windows systems are written by the hardware
vendors not by Microsoft.
Currently Vista MC systems only have a MS provided MPEG2 decoder for support
of TV broadcasts and standard DVDs. It is hoped that the next major update
to Vista MC systems due out later this year will add support for other
encoding schemes such as the those used to encode Blue-Ray DVDs.
Before Vista MS never had support for any DVDs the support was all provided
by the DVD player application vendors or by the graphics card manufacturers.

I got everything to play Blu Ray movies in my PC hardware-wise.

Is it true that Vista Media Player is supposed to play Blu Ray movies or not?

Won't play Blu Ray movies for me. Regular DVDs are no problem. It seems this
is not really understandable and rather a backwards stance on new things.

Pioneer said it would work on a Asus P4C800 Deluxe motherboard. I got a
P4GPLX with a 8800GTS. that is a 915 Grantsdale chipset that is better than
the P4C800, newer anyway, and has a similar SATA chip. I also saw a Corel
patch for that DVD player on the Pioneer site.

I just do not get that Vista Home Premium Media Center does not play my Blu
Ray disc. I mean Vista is the newest OS and I like Vista and I feel very
disappointed for some reason.

I thought I should add that in.

Vista MC does not have a built in decoder for the playing of BR DVDs it is
only capable of playing MPEG2 encoded DVDs .
This is actually a step above MCE 2005 which did not even have the built in
capability to play any DVDs.
The support of abilities to use add on peripherals to Windows is the
responsibility of the vendor selling the add on peripheral it is not MS to
support any possible piece of hardware the some one sells to run on a
windows system.
You have to use the DVD player program that came with your BR DVD drive.

There is no way to play HD-DVD or Bluray in any Vista (or any operating
system) with a software like Power DVD Ultra from Cyberlink. Windows do not
support these format. If you try to use it with the service pack 1 there no
change! It only tell you that you have a Bluray, that all!

May be in the future they wil includ it on the service pack 2... but for now
no application Windows cna play it. The war HD-DVD as just finish, an
Microsoft was on the rong side.... We have to see if in the future they will
follow the market! Sorry for you!

Sorry for my english I'm a french speaking ;^)

There is no requirement for Windows to support Blue-Ray since PowerDVD Ultra
does all on its own using its own software or in combination with current
generation NVIDIA and ATI graphics cards both of which support it.
There are many desktops and laptops now being sold in the US with Vista and
fully supported Blue-Ray drives built in.

Yes they support it with a external soft like Power DVD, but the soft have
many bug when you play new title like the new I-érobot on Blueray. Nero have
a plug in in, but I did not try it... I think that Microsoft sould include
the plug in the media player or via Ultimate center. I have a LG Combo
(HD-Bluray) and I had un LG bluray before and the bug was the same.

Sometime it freeze the soft with Nvidia new driver! Util they will support
directly in Windows I think we could expect having soft touble!

Hopefully they will support it in the next major Vista MC release scheduled
for late this year. MS still does not provide decoder support for MPEG2 in
MCE2005. Vista MC is the first product to have any decoder supplied by MS.

I am ok with Microsoft not including their own Blu-ray codecs. They didn't
include DVD codecs until Vista, one had to purchase third party codecs for
MCE 2002, 2004, 2005.

However, Microsoft DOES need to provide seamless third party support for
Blu-ray, in the same seamless manner that third party support is used for
DVDs. That is, third parties should be able to create a "UI-less" plug-in
for Blu-ray in Vista Media Center. With this, third parties can sell "basic"
software plug-ins for Vista MC (using the built-in MC UI), the same as they
do for DVD playback today. Having to launch a third party application (with
its own UI) from within VMC is completely unacceptable and simply a horrible
solution.

Absolutely!! RCMe has made the most important point here; a third party
developer needs to create a plugin/codec that can be used with Vista Media
Center / Media Player. I'm not sure if Microsoft would need to do anything to
support this or not; it might be possible to simply develop a plugin/codec to
accomplish this. After all, Media Center supports HDTV content and is able to
distinguish it from standard Def content. It's also possible to launch
Cyberlink's Power DVD from within Media center... now all we need is some
way for PowerDVD to use Media Center's UI when launched from within Media
Center. I wish I was a desktop software developer cause it seems like it
should be pretty simple to do something like this.

On another note... it would be nice if Microsoft added native playback
support for people with Vista Home Premium and Ultimate (the same editions
that came with built-in native support for DVD playback). They just need to
shell out $ for the license? Anyone know for sure what would be needed to
make this happen? We paid a premium for these versions of Windows... they
should just give us native blu-ray playback. C'mon Microsoft...

The Xbox has an available HD-DVD add-on...or I should say had. Microsoft
has announced that they were going to end manufacturing them since Toshiba's
announcement, but they have never included it in the Xbox itself.

As for support in Media Center, I believe additional support is required for
both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movies, as in neither our supported out of the box.
It's my understanding that Sony used a non-standard format in Blu-Ray, which
makes it more difficult to support. I have seen reports that Microsoft has
initiated meetings with Sony regarding adding Blu-Ray support. As for which
platforms would be supported, I don't know. Including the Blu-Ray player
inside the PS3 is said to be what allowed the format to win, and who knows
if they are willing to share out complete support for a competitor.

We can hope that we can get an update to decode Blu-Ray movies in media
center though. I know I love mine.
