Drivers for eHome Remote Control and IR Receiver
Posted by Arun on April 21st, 2008

The Microsoft eHome Remote Control and IR Receiver show up as devices with
drivers in Device Manager. I would like to try updating these drivers due to
a problem waking the computer from sleep to see if that helps. However, I've
been unable to locate a download site for them. Does anyone have this link?

I would first see if they are listed on Windows Update. Choose the "Custom"
button to see updates for hardware. Use the links on the left side after
Update is finished searching your computer.

Which version of Media Center are you using?

Jason:

Thank you for your reply. I'm using Vista Ultimate.

Prior to Vista SP1, my system would sleep on queue and wake up from
keyboard, mouse, or remote control events. However, about 20% of the time,
it would crash immediately after waking. The blue screen was always the
generic "Windows has halted to prevent damage to your computer ..." It would
try to create a dump file, but most often fail, and just restart.

When I read about the sleep problems Vista was having and that improvement
was expected in SP1, I decided to just wait for SP1 before pursuing this
issue. After patiently waiting for 6 months, I finally installed SP1. After
that, my system still woke on those events, but crashed 100% of the time.

So, I updated my BIOS and drivers for all devices. Now, my system does not
wake in response to any of those events; I have to use the power switch.
When I press the power switch, the system wakes up, but the USB devices (like
keyboard and mouse) don't wake up. So, I have to press the power switch
again. At that point, the system crashes and does what it has always done,
except that it does it 100% of the time.

I have tried creating a new power plan, disabling turn-off of selective USB
devices, etc. No luck. I tried the private newsgroups (as a partner), but
since it was a blue-screen event, I was denied assistance. I tried uisng
WinDbg, but it is beyond my experience. The only thing I noticed from it was
a few references to USBxxx. Since it seems to be the USB devices that are
not waking up, that made sense, so I'm also pursuing this with Intel. Of
course, everyone is in denial, leaving me in the middle.

Yet, it is undeniable that the behavior distinctly worsened after installing
SP1 and worsened furthered after updating the BIOS and drivers. This is not
a case of someone constantly tinkering with a system until it finally blows
up. I'm just trying to get it to run as advertised for the first time since
it was built. Every 3-6 months I go through the same process of BIOS and
driver updates hoping one day someone will actually fix what they sold me.

Thus, SP1 was a huge loss for me. Things had been making steady progress
until this. All my hardware is only a year old, everything is Vista logoed,
and everything has current (mostly 2008) drivers. The system is basically
used for Media Center only (not even local email) and only has a few other
programs loaded (like Rhapsody, WinAmp, and Google Earth). How can Microsoft
possibly expect acceptance in the living room with this kind of experience?
Very disappointing.

Shut down your system.
Then unplug it from its power source.
Disconnect any USB devices other then the mouse and keyboard. One of these
other devices such as a flash drive may be causing your problem.
While still unplugged hold down the power on button for 20-30 seconds to
clear the blockage of your USB bus(s)
Plug the system back it and try to turn it on.
Also when you say you have the latest drivers did you get them from the
vendors Websites(preferred source) or from WinUpdate?

JW:

Thank you for your reply. I will try your suggestion and post back here.
However, the only USB device I have connected, besides my keyboard-mouse
(touchpad) combo, is the IR receiver for the remote control.

All of the drivers I have loaded are from the manufacturer. If you are
implying that the drivers recommended by Windows Update are less
reliable/stable, I couldn't agree more. We warn all cusotmers not to select
drivers recommended by Windows Update. That part of the service should
either be abandoned or improved to make the proper checks before making
recommendations. As it stands, it most often does more harm than good.

JW:

I tried your power draining suggestion, but it had no affect on the problem.
However, further testing appears to show it is a USB issue. I replaced my
USB keyboard with a PS/2 keyboard and the system woke on keyboard events,
without crashing, but still did not wake on IR receiver events.

Thus, it seems no USB events wake the system after the SP!, BIOS, and driver
updates. I checked Device Manager and the devices all have the Allow device
to wake the system setting enabled on the Power Management tab, including the
ones that don't work

However, all of the USB root hubs have that option grayed out on their Power
Management tabs. Is that normal? Does that setting override the device
setting? What controls that setting's availability?

Thanks!
Tim
