I believe there is a card for Apples that will accept HD over conmponent for
about 3K$.
The bandwidth required to transfer decoded HD is so high that there is no
market for cards that could handle it the high cost.
At CES Bill gates stated that they have an agreement with DirecTV that will
enable them to support DirectTV capable tuner cards in Vista. However,
there was some doubt that that was what he really ment. Vista will support
CableCards for HD over cable.

thanks JW for your help if i understand you apple may make a card for $3000.
well thats not going to help too expensive. don't really know what vista is
or how that helps me unless what you mean is there is a card coming out
shortly to help with this problem? let me ask this if i hook antenna to
tuner card for over the air hd in addition to the two directv boxes i have
now will media center sort it out? i thought i read you can't mix signals. or
if i do away with directv and hook antenna to tuner card will it give me 2
signals [watch one record one]?

Vista is the next major release of Windows scheduled to be out by next
holiday season.
The standare Tuner cards are NTSC analog cards and get stations 2-99 with an
antenna or cable connection to the cards antenna connector. If you get a
dual tuner card then you can recored one station and watch another at the
same time. You can also get an HDTV tuner card which will let you watch or
record digital stations in your area with an antenna.
The cards also have a S-Video and audio input connection which you can use
to input SD programs or HD programs downscaled to SD from a cable or
satellite Set Top Box(STB).
You can not mix input types for analog inputs (ie you can not have antenna
connection on one NTSC card and a STB via S-Video on another..

thanks again JW my card is a dual digital tuner card so if i hook up a good
antenna ishould be able to watch and record channels 2-99.and ishould be able
to get free over the air hd that these stations offer. too bad no hd for
directv was looking forward to espn hd and showtime movies hd but as i 've
learned you can't always get what you want. maybe someone will come out with
a card in the future. it seems to me it would be in directv best interest to
because i love the media center program and know it is the way of the future.
look forward to vista sounds cool. any info avaliable on it yet? thanks again
for the info

I am not aware of any dual digital tuner cards for OTA ATSC broadcasts in
North America.
Exactly what model tuner card do you have? Also you can not use a hybrid
NTSC (analog)and ATSC (digital) tuner card with MCE only the ATSC tuner is
supported and to install the card with MCE you need to have a separate NTSC
tuner card already installed and working.

JW iwant to say first when it comes to ota atsc ntsc i know very little,
when it comes to pc's i know even less. i know when i bought this pc from
dell they told me it was a dual digital tuner. since i use two directv boxes
never questioned it. my device manager calls my card angel mpeg device when i
got pc had trouple with it and dell sent me to www.luminate to get new
drivers.my sells invoice lists it as module,card,mm,tvt3,fh,mce05,dao
whatever that means. i asked dell when i ordered the pc if it had digital
tuner because i had heard that in an other year or so all tv's would have to
have digital tuners. dell said it would have.but as i've sinced learned dell
says anything althought they did replace my pc after about 200 hours on the
phone trying to fix it .this one works great knock on wood because i never
want to call them again.i don't know if it will recieve a digital signal or
not since i've never tried it .using directv boxes is ok but picture quality
is not as good as my tivo systems. thats why i wanted to try hd thought it
would improve all around picture quality. would like to know if that card
will recieve digital signal before i sink $1000 in good digital antenna.
thanks again for your help

It appears that you have a dual analog tuner or 2 analog tuners which means
it receives the standard TV broadcasts which have been around for 50 years
and meet the NTSC tranmission standard and your tuner(s) is capable of
receiving channels 2-99 from an antenna (Over The Air or OTA) or from a
Cable connection direct to the antenna connection on the tuner card(s)
You apparently also have the option to connect 2 cable or satellite boxes to
2 tuner S-Video and audio connections on your tuner card(s) instead which
can be used to recieve HD programs that are downscled to SD level.

With the antenna connectiont you should be able to watch on channel (2-99)
and record another(2-99). or you should be able to watch 1 channel and
record another from the 2 Set top boxes.

You do not have a digital tuner and therfore can not receive any digital
broadcasts in either SD or HD that are available from your local Television
stations via antenna (OTA).

that would not surprise me does anyone make a digital tuner for media center?
if i get a digital tuner will i need two in order to watch one and record on
the other? maybe i'm missing something but hd has been around for a while,i
would think it should be able to get it on the media center some how. i still
can't believe my brand new pc is analog it makes no sence since analog is on
it's way out.i think something is going to change in the way we watch tv
because i'm sure there is many people like me 'people who can't get cable or
good broadcast signals and rely on satelites for tv service.

You can get HDTV digital tuner cards which can receive digital broadcasts
from your local Network TV stations using an antenna or the same channels
that are available unencrypted form your cable company if they provide them
with some of the HDTV tuner cards. The ability to receive digital from Cable
or DirecTV Satellite willl be available by next holiday season with the
realease of Microsoft Vista which contains the required support and licenses
and will have been certified for Cable Card and DirectTV use. New tuners
will be required in order to use this functionality.

JW thanks for all the info you've been a lot of help. i talked to dell cust
support they are sticking to thier story, they told me with my tuner card
using the catv conn i would be able to recieve digital signals and free over
the air hd. also they say if i'm recording one station i'll be able to switch
to different station to watch while i'm recording . iguess the only way i'll
know is to hook it up and see. i'm apt to believe you since dell has misled
me before. someone should let them know they are misrepresenting the media
center. thanks again.

I know of no card that supports both an analog and a digital tuner that is
supported my MCE to use both.
Also I know of no HDTV digital card that will support two tuners. You would
need 2 HDTV cards.
I could not connect to the luminate site to see what I could learn more
about your tuner card.
Please give me the model numer of your dell and the DELL part number of your
tuner card.
I beleive Dell support is getting totaly confused by the fact that your
analog tuner card converts all analog SD input to an MPEG2 encoded digital
file before passing it to MCE.
Have you checked antennaweb.org to fine out what local digital channels
you can receive from your address. If you are in a metropolitan area a pair
of 10$ rabbit ears my be all you need for an antenna or a very inexpensive
UHF antenna.
In any case if there are no local Network digital stations available in your
ZIP code then your Cable Provider will not provide any of them in
unencrypted digital format unless you can also receive them with a resonably
priced antenna.
Does your Tuner card have a pair of S-Video and the associated audio
connections so that you can connect two STBs?

JW i could not connect to luminate site either. thats one reason i came here.
my pc is xps400 service tag 15F6191 not sure part # of card but i'm sure
your right. there is digital avaliale in my area but need extremly good
antenna to recieve thats why i need to find out about this card.i talked to
antenna store in my area they said other people near me use digital signal
but the antenna require ir very large and needs a pre amp all to gether about
$600 or $1000 installed. but which cards are the best? if i need 2 i'll get 2
if my pc will accept them. yea dell i think is confused. i just want hd,but
if it 's going to be better to wait a year and get it when vista comes out
i'll wait. don't won't to spend so much and in a year change again.don't mind
speding the money for antenna but still will have to keep directv no cable
will ever be offered in the woods where i live.

You are obviously better off waiting till next fall since any money you
spend now will be wasted once you can get a DirecTV tuner when Vista comes
out. Just stay with connecting your DirecTV hd box directly to your TV till
then and don't try using MCE with it unless want to also watch HD programs
using SD resolution.
