HDTV STB to MCE, is it possible?
Posted by albert on November 27th, 2005

I have Optimum online DTV STB w/HDTV, trying to connect to MCE HD input and
HD out to TV through extender (wireless). I see that MCE only supports over
the air DTV...can this be done and will the Guide work? If doable, what kind
of vid card do you recommend? Thanks

OTA means just that..... MCE can accept an HD signal ONLY if it comes direct
from a plain old fashioned antenna on your roof and you connect that to a tv
tuner in your MCE PC that has HD capability.

From a satellite or cable receiver box, you can have SD ONLY.

Pardon my ignorance but what is SD and what is the optimal Vid card for MCE
to smoothly handle OTA HD, how much VRAM is required...anyone know?

SD = Standard Definition (as opposed to HD = High Definition).....

I have a FX5700 with 256mb RAM.

To handle OTA HDTV MS reccomends that you have 512MB of RAM and a video card
with 128MB of memory and a memory bandwidth of 10GB/sec. I reccomend a
128MB NVIDIA 6600GT since it meets the bandwith required to process both
1080i and 720p programs received with an OTA HDTV tuner card and has all of
the NVIDIA PureVideo support for better PQ of 180i or 1080i programs when yu
use the NVIDIA Decoder.

So the Nividia card will handle HD, but is the decoder not a part of the
card? Anyway, do I need another extender if I am using Xbox 360 to connect to
the HD TV set (hardwire)...planning on connecting MCE to 802.11g network

802.11g isn't going to be sufficient for HD content. You should use 802.11a

When you buy a NVIDIA card the manutacturer of the card normally includes
the NVIDIA decoder.
An extender uses its own decoder since it recieves the encoded video form
the MCE host system. I have not seen any recommendations posted from MS
about what network bandwidth is required to transport HD 1080i or 720p
encoded video to an extender. Posssibly Barb has the answer since I saw one
post from her implying that more effiecinet network transfers have been
implemented in RU2 for use with the XBOX 360 extender and from this post I
presume the 811.g mite be sufficient for HD programming iif only one XBOX
360 extender is in use.

If I understand the last post correctly, the NVIDIA connected to a 811.1 will
transmit NVIDIA decoded 1080i and 720p to a xbox 360 which acts as an
extender, which then should put the signal to the HD TV set. I see no need
for additional extenders anywhere...where am I going wrong.

No the NVIDIA decoder and video card are only used to decode and display the
HDTV programs on the MCE system PC. When using a XBOX 360 extender the
still encoded HDTV programs are sent to the extender since the extender has
its own decoder and display chips anc encoded files are much smaller than
decoded video. Yes, you need no other extender.
