How to improve TV quality - Hauppauge 500
Posted by Kasper on December 19th, 2005

Hi

I'm using a Hauppauge 500 for my mce2005, but I'm not that impressed with
the image quality even though I've configured it to be at "best". One thing
is the still image compression; I've managed to live with that. But the
motion picture quality shows clearly it's flaws, e.g. when watching a
football match. Its more jerky and definetely not as smooth compared to the
original input. Is there any way to improve this?

And when can one expect to see mpg4 compression cards instead of the old
mpeg2?

Thanks,
Kasper

What Decoder are you useing? There is a know issue with recent releases of
the NVIDIA Decoder causing jumpiness or jerkiness when de-interlacing
contril mode is set to Smart when watching video. The workaound in this
situation is to use Video or Automatic mode.
Another potential problem can be an underpowered graphics card. What
graphics card and driver release are you using?
Is the audio also jerky?

Thanks for the reply.
I'm using nvidia purevideo decoder v. 4020.150.0.0 on my ati radeon 9600 pro
256mb card. DVD and normal avi play just fine, it's only when I watch
live-tv it "drop frames" and gets a little jerky.
The ati driver is version 8.191.0.0; I had some problems with the video
using older drivers, but the one from 28-10-2005 fixed this.

De-interlacing is set to automatic, and Film mode gives the same.
The audio is just fine.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Kasper

Do you also have trouble when playing a recorded TV program?
If yes do you have trouble when playing the same recoreded program with
Media Player instead of MCE?
If No then check for your tuner card sharing its IRQ with your video card

Try updating your NVidia Purevideo codec. Yours is a bit old.

Recorded TV and liveTV is the same, yes. I tried running a recorded show
using the normal WMP and it plays the same way.
Also, the IRQ list shows that the gfx-card and the tuner have their own IRQ.

As Jason suggested, I'll try to update the nvidia decoder and see what
happens. The only thing is that I have a pretty stable and working setup, so
I dont want to mess with too much - other that fixing this issue ;-)

Any other suggestions are very welcome.

Also, what drivers are you using on the Hauppauge PVR500?

I am using a 2.0.30-something version. I'll try with updated drivers and see
what happens!

Since I will be travelling for a couple of days, my trials will be delayed
for a little while.
